The creation of Labor Day is credited to the Pullman Strike of 1894.   But the Pullman unions were all white. Black workers were prohibited from organizing alongside white union workers to demand what they deserved. The struggle for labor has historically been riddled with racism and sexism, and this was no different.  Decades later, A. Phillip Randolph and Milton Webster founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, to allow the Black men who staffed these cars to fight for their rights, pay and dignity as workers.   A. Phillip Randolph conceived of the original March on Washington in the 1940s-but cancelled the rally after years of organizing finally forced FDR to declare an order to end racial discrimination in federal defense.   Black labor has been undervalued since the founding of this country. And despite Trump’s desire to call that truth “unamerican,” it is necessary that we learn better and do better anyway.   To the domestic workers, the farmhands, the sharecroppers, the teachers, the nurses, the drivers, the custodians, the professors, the cooks, the administrators, and all of our enslaved ancestors, we owe you more than some barbecue today.  We owe you the dignity for which you fought then, and the dignity everyone deserves now.   Today, I made a donation to @domesticworkers. I encourage you to follow them, @workingfamilies, and the local unions in your space that stand up for justice and equity.
