Adiós "Guernica!"
#OTD in 1981, Pablo Picasso’s monumental anti-war mural was packed up and returned to the artist’s native Spain after 42 years on extended loan to MoMA.
Due to security concerns, the de-installation took place in secret. A crew of handlers took #Guernica off the wall of its third-floor gallery, rolled the unstretched canvas in layers of Mylar, and placed it in a specially made shipping container.
The painting flew back to Spain that evening on a commercial flight, and can now be seen at the @museoreinasofia in Madrid.
#Picasso had always intended for "Guernica" to return to Spain, but only when Francisco Franco’s dictatorship came to an end. Unfortunately he didn’t live to see the day; the artist died two years before Franco in 1973, and the country’s return to a democracy.
