I grew up pledging allegiance to the flag and believing America was nearly perfect. As I became more aware of the ugliness in our past and present, the meaning of the American flag changed in my mind from national pride to symbolizing a lie that we try and tell ourselves and our children. When I recently moved into a house that sported a big flag out front, the first thing I did was take it down. Flying the flag to me felt like a disregard for our mistakes, past and present

I’ve been contemplating this idea, first proposed by POW to once again make the American flag a symbol we can all be proud of. Why can’t the flag represent those of us that believe climate change is a threat and those of us that that believe we should constantly be working towards a more just world? It’s true that America is so much more than its mistakes. There is also so much here to be proud of. The people, the opportunity, the ideals written in the constitution of equality and justice for all - even if we are still working to fulfill them. If we want positive progress we must first be able to imagine that future. Im going to put back up my flag as a hope for a unified country, right next to the last sign in this photo reel.

Whether you agree with my principles or not, there is one thing we can all agree on: the land is worth protecting. As Americans, it's literally our common ground. That's why I've already made a plan to vote in November. @protectourwinters has made a tool that helps you make sure you're registered, request mail-in or absentee ballots, and set reminders. Imagine if all 50 million people in the #OutdoorState united around our common ground, this land, and voted against climate change. We could make a massive impact in the fight to save our playgrounds. Link in bio for the Make A Plan To Vote Tool. #CommonGround #MakeAPlanToVote"
