Beloved Indian artist Bhupen Khakhar hung this painting in pride of place in the drawing room of his home in Baroda. Depicting one of his closest friends in front of Delhi’s Red Fort, Khakhar kept the painting with him for his whole life.

At the time the portrait was created in 1971, Shankerbhain Patel was frail and nearly blind, and when he died a few years later, Khakhar never fully recovered. He has been immortalised in some of the artist’s most important paintings - such as this - which will be offered as part of our Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art auction in London on September 29.
