After a night of receiving oxygen and quiet rest, Chandra checks on the chick at 5:30 a.m. Watching this moment transpire—Chandra’s complete calm in the face of deep distress—was a life lesson in grace and strength. When she turned on the lights, the chick was completely still... because baby was peacefully sleeping! After observation over the course of the morning by the Condor team, as well as an assessment from Dr. Powell, not to mention parents Sequoia and Squapuni clearly missing their baby (look at them! #forlorn), the team made the decision to put the chick back into the nest box. As you know from the Ninja Nest Box Mission (see earlier posts), it’s all about picking the right moment and being completely calm. Mike steadfastly delivered food buckets as per routine— only #LA1720 was in one of those buckets (!) and promptly placed baby back in the box. Sequoia and Squapuni arrived, and after a moment of discovery and realization, immediately fed their child and began brooding. We don’t know exactly what caused LA1720’s respiratory distress—it could have been some kind of throat irritation or any number of things. While further tests could have been done, this would mean not only distressing the chick but prolonging absence from the parents. These kinds of situations happen in the wild and, in the best of circumstances, will resolve. With a critically endangered bird like LA1720, the priority of the team was to be certain there were no life-threatening dangers and then reunite with mom and dad as soon as possible (if the situation took a turn for the worse, they could retrieve the baby again). I’m happy to let you know there have been no further signs of distress and baby LA1720 is doing great! It’s been an intense emotional journey as I’ve witnessed these folks diligently, fiercely watch over this wee one’s life—this is how you, literally, save a species from extinction. Baby #LA1720, parents Sequoia and Squapuni, Dr. Powell, and the Condor team are the kind of heroic souls I need in the world right now.
