Photograph by John Stanmeyer — During the years I'd lived in Bali, a friend, Bli Wayan, had told me about a majestic waterfall called Yeh Mampeh, located in the far eastern reaches of the island. Significantly off the main tourist trails, he often mentioned how secluded, untouched and near mystical this waterfall was. I had wanted to include this waterfall in my book, Island of the Spirits, but due to Yeh Mampeh's distance from my former home, we had never made it. During this return to the island with my family, today the kids and I drove the meandering roads of the east coast to the small town of Les to discover for the first time this magical waterfall (air terjun in Indonesian). After a 2.2k (1.3 mile) walk, we came upon what truly was an astonishing sight — two local men enjoying the crashing water of Yeh Mampeh, dropping 40 meters (131 feet) off a cliff. Feed by a lake from nearby Mount Batur (an astonishing active volcano), Bli Wayan was correct...Yeh Mampeh is indeed a majestically lovely, rarely visited waterfall, one which I'm now glad to have finally experienced. If you're ever in Bali and near Singaraja, Mt.
