The thing I desperately wanted to do when I was a junior in high school was to make an animation featuring bizarre and fantastic mechas, in which a refreshing narrative unfolded. The reason why it had to be an animation was because back then in Japan, there was no way one could produce something like Star Wars in film, whereas in animation it was possible. There were also works of Japanese animation that moved me.
I was immersed with my entire being in adoration for mechas that indecisive, dull characters, seemingly the very reflections of myself, would wear or ride to fight battles, making cathartic explosions at the end. I couldn’t make my dream come true, however, and became a contemporary artist—and yet, with Jellyfish Eyes Part 2, I was determined to realize my dream, and got immersed in it.

僕が高校2年生でどうしてもやりたかった事は、奇想天外なメカニックが活躍して胸のすくような物語が展開する、そんなアニメーションを作りたかった。なんでアニメーションだったかと言うと、当時の日本の映画製作の力では、スターウォーズのような物が出来るはずがなかったし、アニメーションなら日本でもなんとか作れていて、僕自身が感動出来たから。
冴えない自分を投影するようなもじもじしたキャラクターがゴツいメカに乗ってドンパチやらかしてドカーンと爆発してスカッとする、そんなメカへの憧憬が全身を包んでいた。しかし、夢叶わず、現代美術作家としてデヴューしたけれど、夢果たすまじ！と入れ込んだのが「めめめのくらげ2 」だったのだ。
