For many football players at Forest Hill High School in Jackson, Mississippi, the game is a means to an end: college. Their love of it comes second.⁠

That stepping stone to a way out of Jackson disappeared in August, when Jackson Public Schools canceled all fall activities, citing Mississippi’s surging coronavirus infection rate.⁠

Ten of the 138 school districts in Mississippi canceled the fall athletic season. They have a lot in common: All are among the lowest-performing in the state, all are overwhelmingly poor and all but one have a student body that is at least 93 percent Black.⁠
