For many football players at Forest Hill High School in Jackson, Mississippi, the game is a means to an end: college. Their love of it comes second.
That stepping stone to a way out of Jackson disappeared in August, when Jackson Public Schools canceled all fall activities, citing Mississippi’s surging coronavirus infection rate.
Ten of the 138 school districts in Mississippi canceled the fall athletic season. They have a lot in common: All are among the lowest-performing in the state, all are overwhelmingly poor and all but one have a student body that is at least 93 percent Black.
