For this project, Do Ho Suh has covered virtually every surface of his old NYC apartment with paper, and then coated his fingers in pastel and rubbed the walls and objects “caressing them”. Suh started working on this piece when he no longer lived in NYC, so the work can be seen as a form of a ritual goodbye to his old home. The attempt of “Passage/s” (also called by the artist the Rubbing/Loving Project), was “to make my place portable, even wearable, so I could take it with me wherever I went.” .
