Everything alive, whether it is a plant or an animal, will defend itself when threatened. Since plants can’t run away, they cover themselves in poison or spines so that they can survive.

Much of human progress has come from our ability to cook and ferment and crush plants so that they don’t kill us, at least not very quickly. Evolution has taught us that it is better to die slowly from plant toxins than to die rapidly from starvation.

When someone tells you to go on a “plant-based diet“ for your health, they are ignoring these facts.

Different plants do different things to your biology, and most of them want to kill you. Don’t believe me? Ricin, the nerve gas used in the Tokyo subway attacks, is a plant-based protein from beans.

Four ways plants make you weak from the Bulletproof Diet book:
- Lectins (not all lectins are wrong, you make some in your body every day, but some types mess with you)
- Oxalates (spinach and kale, mostly raw, are stupid. Beets too.)
- Phytates (grains, nuts, and seeds contain compounds that stop you from absorbing protein)
- Mycotoxins (these toxins from mold form as fuel to toxins when plants grow, or as storage toxins after we pick them. Grains and coffee are significant sources)

Your mission, should you choose to accept, is to expose yourself to these toxins as little as possible, and watch what happens when you stop doing the things that make you weak.

After that, you can layer in things like ketosis and other more advanced biohacking things.

Not eating a little bit of poison every day can go a long way.

What’s left to eat, you might ask? That’s why I made the Bulletproof Diet Roadmap. The short version is that grass-fed meat, butter, eggs, and white rice are almost always safe, and so are some vegetables, but fewer than you might think.
