Photo by @babaktafreshi / A prominent comet visible to the naked eye passes by Earth every decade or so. In July comet NEOWISE put on a beautiful show in the northern hemisphere after surviving solar heat and radiation. It was fainter, colorless, and smaller to the eye than shown in this single-exposure (two minutes) through a 135mm telephoto lens—but it was still a beautiful sight to behold in the dark. Many comets have been recorded by my cameras in years of night-sky photography. Most were faint but a few were much brighter than this. I vividly remember Comet Hale-Bopp, in 1997, boldly visible even from cities, or Hyakutake, in 1996, with its long tail! No one knows when the next bright comet will arrive, next year or the next decade. Explore more with me from Earth to the universe @babaktafreshi.
