Non-ordinary states are an important part of being human. The state of high-performance itself is not ordinary.

Our job is to learn how to put ourselves into whatever healing or other unusual states will serve us best.

I tried ayahuasca more than 20 years ago in Peru with a shaman. I've had my share of other substances along my path of self-discovery too.

The role of most plant medicines is to kick open the door, so you know what it looks like, and you can find it again.

Some medicines will help you process individual traumas each time you use them.

But here’s the thing: when you are doing that kind of healing, it’s intense. It’s hard work. It’s not a party.

Now that plant medicines are not so hard to get, I see a larger number of people who have done absurd amounts of plant medicine in the name of spiritual development or healing.

It’s a slippery slope. Most of these types of medicine are not addictive biologically, but they can be used for escapism.

If this describes you, ask yourself if yet another journey will heal you, or whether you need to do the healing yourself with or without the plants.

The path to self-awareness doesn’t require plant medicines, but it does require altered states. You can reach them with fasting, breathing, pulsed electromagnets, light and sound, sex, drumming, and (my favorite) neurofeedback.

And when you choose to do those things, with or without plant medicines, remember that you are doing it to grow, not to escape!

What do you think about plant medicine?
