The disenfranchisement we are witnessing today is part of a centuries-long history of Black folks being told that there is no room for us within civic discourse, at the polls or in the government.  We saw that change in 2008 when the surge in Black voters nearly erased the racial gap. Black women turned out at a higher rate than any other racial, ethnic and gender group. Younger Black folks voted in greater proportions than whites for the first time. And as a result, WE elected our first Black President. TWICE over.  We must show up again.  As the late John Lewis said: “When you see something that is not right, you must say something. You must do something." Our vote is our voice. Our vote is our power. Our vote matters.
