On September 2nd we introduced the new S-Class! Each of its predecessors marked the very forefront of modern technology. In 1981, the airbag, now a central element of automotive safety, first made its way into series production in the S-Class from the 126 series. The driver’s airbag was initially combined with a pyrotechnic belt tensioner for the passenger seat. Beginning in 1988, Mercedes-Benz also offered its customers a passenger airbag. As part of a major model update in the fall of 1985, all S-Class models with gasoline engines were equipped with a regulated three-way catalytic converter on request.
