The National Snow and Ice Data Center is about to announce the 2020 sea ice minimum, which indicates how far the ice has retreated during summer months. The region has seen a dramatic shrinking of the sea-ice extent over the past few decades, as climate change causes temperatures to rise steadily. A team of Greenpeace scientists and campaigners are currently on board the Arctic Sunrise—one of very few vessels currently conducting research because of the pandemic—to conduct biodiversity sampling and raise awareness of how the sea ice minimum stands to impact all of us.
