Made in China more than three thousand years ago, this is a ‘ding’.

Cooked foods were offered in three-legged pots like this one in ceremonies conducted at the graveside, and then the ‘ding’, which formed sets with wine and other vessels, was buried together with additional luxury grave goods.

Originally, the bronzes would have been gold-coloured and shiny, but over time a dull, grey-green patina builds up. The form developed from pottery cooking vessels with three legs to raise the vessel above a flame.

Look closely and you will see two dragon-like creatures under the rim 🐲
