At church today our pastor told a little of the backstory of Anne Sullivan, the incredible teacher and companion to Helen Keller. Wow, had to share!

Anne experienced terrible loss and abuse in her life. At five she contracted a disease in her eyes that made her nearly blind, at eight she lost her mom to tuberculosis, her dad left her and her brother in an overcrowded “poorhouse.” Her brother died there 4 months later. She underwent multiple painful surgeries on her eyes. The place she lived was shut down for “cruelty to inmates, sexually perverted practices and cannibalism.” She was transferred to a charity hospital for a while, then the place that had been shut down re-opened and she was sent back there!

Anne finally got moved to a school for the blind where at first it is said that her behavior was so bad and manners so rough that they could hardly deal with her. But she learned! Somehow a teacher connected with her, helped her, and at 20 years old she graduated valedictorian of her class!!

From then on you know the rest of the story! What I was so struck by and inspired by is that Anne didn’t feel sorry for herself, didn’t place blame, didn’t live in shame. She went on to make an enormous impact on someone else’s life, and on the lives of all of us who have ever heard the name Helen Keller. I read these words today from her graduation speech and I can’t get over them knowing all that she had lived through!

“Fellow-graduates: Duty bids us go forth into active life. Let us go cheerfully, hopefully, and earnestly, and set ourselves to find our especial part. When we have found it, willingly and faithfully perform it; for every obstacle we overcome, every success we achieve tends to bring man closer to God and make life more as He would have it.” - Anne Sullivan

A few thoughts:
-Never give up on anyone
-Never, ever give up on yourself
-Let go of the past hurts that are holding you back
-There is no one too far gone, too messed up, too hurt, too (insert whatever here) that God can not use!
-Also, what could we possibly have to complain about?!?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on reading her story. I can’t stop thinking about this amazing woman!
