One of the most significant artist manuscripts ever to enter a UK public collection, ‘Avant et après (Before and After)’ was written in 1903, the year of the artist’s death, at his home in French Polynesia. The 213-page handwritten manuscript reveals important insights into Gauguin’s life, relationships and thoughts, including the fateful incident in which Van Gogh severed his ear after the pair quarrelled. The exquisite work was acquired via the Government’s Acceptance in Lieu scheme administered by the Arts Council (@aceagrams), with the help of Sotheby’s Tax, Heritage and UK Museums team. The last major manuscript by Gauguin in the world to exist outside a public collection, and the only example of its kind in the UK, the manuscript had never before been exhibited or studied. It will be displayed alongside Gauguin’s paintings and sculpture in The Courtauld Gallery’s Great Room when the gallery reopens in 2021.
