The term originally came into use to describe paintings by abstract expressionist artists (also referred to as action painters). Abstract painters associated with this movement, such as Jackson Pollock and Helen Frankenthaler, poured paint onto canvases, often using sticks or brushes to spread, drip or create lines and pools of paint.
