I’ve used the word, “multi-hyphenate” a lot and I want to take a moment to define it. For me, a multi-hyphenate is an artist who identifies across multiple disciplines in their life practice. For example, I consider myself an actor, director, writer, producer, and educator. ⁣

So often we’re told or we believe we have to pick a singular thing — but in my filmmaking class at NYU, the #NineMusesLab, I encourage the multi-hyphenate artist, as they are ultimately the most valuable collaborators and compelling storytellers. ⁣

This is not a normal semester for Tisch Drama students, and while filmmaking typically requires a massive amount of problem solving and presents a variety of unforeseeable challenges, a pandemic was certainly one we never saw coming. During our last class, we dove right into a question on everyone’s mind when it comes to remote production and socially distanced collaboration in the entertainment industry: What’s been done and what’s possible? ⁣

The entertainment industry is a new landscape and the Lab students are at the forefront of imagining and actualizing how to create within it.
