Mr. Thapar - the owner/operator of @quickstopgroceries and my boss from 1989 to 1994 - sent me this letter when I was attending the @vancouverfilmschool. In it, he gave me the key to unlock my future with 12 simple words: “I have no objection if you want to shoot inside the store.” Mr. Thapar hired me himself, so he’d already been giving me a living; but by granting me permission to make a movie inside of #quickstop, he gave me a shot at a life I was dreaming about: a future in film. If the answer had been no, without the key location/set, I never would’ve written #Clerks in the first place. I’ve kept this letter for years to remind me that one small kindness can truly change the world. In a way, by giving me the thumbs up to make a movie in his store, Mr. Thapar (seen in the pic with me and the ageless Mrs. Thapar) was my Medici: a patron saint of the indie film arts. But aside from the Quick Stop green light, you can see in the letter that Mr. T also did something that cost him nothing: he encouraged a fledgling artist. He didn’t try to dissuade me from chasing a dream: he made a million-to-one shot seem possible by regarding my goals seriously. The man gave me my first job in the movie biz when he gave me a job at R.S.T. Video, and then he cleared the path for takeoff to my career in entertainment. Some people don’t like their bosses, but I loved mine - and still love them to this day. And they continue to facilitate the arts: their son Rajiv is partnered with me and @odblues7 in the Leonardo #smodcastle. I’m pretty sure it’s my destiny to buy Mr. and Mrs. Thapar out of Quick Stop one day - so they can retire and I can return to the strip mall Giving Tree that made me who I am. Apparently, even though it’s been 26 years since I jockeyed the register there, I’m not done working at Quick Stop yet. #KevinSmith #thapar #newjersey #movies #moviehistory」9月29日 5時41分 - thatkevinsmith
