Celebrating @NaturalisMuseum's 200th anniversary, an inside look into this synergic, architectural collaboration between Iris van Herpen and @NeutelingsRiedijkArchitects for the Netherland’s world-renowned Institute for Biodiversity.
As a part of the designer’s multidisciplinary approach to Couture, 263 panels were created from hand-sanded concrete and white marble aggregate to shape the three-dimensional stone textures that look as soft as silk.
"The erosion details within rocks, re-sculpted by water throughout centuries and the eternalised mysterious beauty of fossils moved me to drape and pleat with stone instead of silk. Three-dimensional biomorphic patterns entwine the in and outside of Naturalis, like the archeology of a dress." ~ Iris
From the exterior, the Naturalis is wrapped in horizontal layers of Iranian travertine stone, embedded with natural crystals, that are interrupted by Van Herpen’s textured panels — pulsing across the surface, visualising geologic structures.
