Marilyn Minter’s sensual paintings, photographs, and videos vividly explore complex and contradictory emotions around beauty and the female body in American culture. In Smash, Minter presents a foreboding and empowering look at the glitz and glamour of designer shoes. The model’s feet are uncomfortably squeezed into a pair of heels, and her movements are slippery on slick silver liquid, before she slowly and ominously destroys the glass pane separating the subject from the viewer. Initially commissioned for the Brooklyn Museum’s 2014–15 exhibition Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe, Smash can be seen in full as part of our Art on the Stoop #SunsetScreenings series, showing each Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday through October 11, starting at 6pm.⠀
⠀
Tune in today at 1pm on our Instagram Live to get some Screen Time with Minter (@marilynminter) as she joins senior curator Catherine Morris (@catherinejanetmorris) in a chat about this work, and more.⠀
