Photo by @lucalocatelliphoto / As one of the world's most nature-oriented countries, Iceland gets approximately 87% of its hot water for households from geothermal energy. During my last assignment for National Geographic magazine, I had the chance to visit Hellisheidi, Iceland’s largest geothermal power station and the third largest in the world. It has been designed to meld with the environment—neutral painted pipes minimize the visual impact on the landscape while a circular water system has been put into work to extract and pump back water underground.

Energy production is a cause of the climate crisis, therefore finding a way to generate cleaner energy is one of the big challenges for the future. Geothermal is a solution that could be applicable in many countries that can tap volcanic activity instead of burning coal or oil.
