Traditionally charcoal is made from thin peeled willow twigs which are heated without oxygen. This produces the black sticks of charcoal which leave microscopic particles on the paper or textile fibres, producing a line that is dense at the pressure point, but more diffuse or powdery at the edges. The overall result is less precise and more difficult to control than hard graphite pencils, so charcoal is better suited to quicker or freer studies. It also means that when using charcoal you're more prone to 'happy accidents' which can be a joy of the medium. ✏️ There are many different charcoal drawing techniques including hatching, blending, smudging with fingers or lifting with an eraser (to create clean areas.)
