I would literally not be where I am today without one of my favorite teachers, Mr. Newkirk. I remember walking into his social studies class as a Sophomore & clocking the only book on his desk, “Lies My Teacher Told Me.” I literally laughed out loud + thought, ok this guy’s pretty cool. He always relayed the truth straight up, even when it wasn’t easy. As a Senior, I was accepted to Princeton University (he also wrote my recommendation letter there). Rather than bury me in pressure to go to an Ivy League school — instead, he encouraged me to move cross country to Los Angeles to chase my dream to become an actor. I will never forget the moment he looked me straight in the eyes and said, “Kate, school will always be here. Go see what’s out there.” I am from a small town, a public school. Without Mr. Newkirk believing in me, I’m honestly not sure I had it in me to believe in myself. The long of the short is this: Never let a “what if” pass you by ... life moves so fast. Give it all you got. Thank you to those who loan us the faith when we fall short. Mr. Newkirk, I hope you’re reading this.
