Brice Marden's meandering ribbons of color are given full reign in 'The Golden Pelvic', an early example of this highly-coveted series painted between 1993 and 1995 and a highlight of our 20th Century Evening Sale on 6 October.⠀

The painting's title derives its name from the mathematical law of beauty found in Classical art and architecture known as the Golden Ratio, and the graceful, s-shaped curve of the human body developed by the ancient Greeks, and later termed contrapposto.⠀

In 'The Golden Pelvic', what might appear as a simple arrangement of colorful lines is actually quite complex. As the eye traces the serpentine curves and lasso loops, one discovers that many of them, in fact, change color along their route: what begins as orange branches off into brighter yellow; in another line, what begins as red later turns to green. These lines are nestled together, looping over and under each other, and set apart from a bright white background that infuses the painting with a palpable sense of natural light.⠀
