I reached Kedarnath, right at the beginning of the Arti one evening, and I looked towards him, oblivious of how he was just everywhere, and I asked, “Why?”

He said, “Just stay around for 2-3 days and you’ll know.”

So I did as he said, I stayed around for a few days, until one evening I again sat down for another round of conversations.

He laughed, and said,

“You see the mountains behind the temple that you so dearly love, they’ve been around forever, and they’ll be around forever. Same is for me, I’ve been here for millennia, even before the temple came, and I’ll be even when there won’t be anything. So why do you care, why do you look around so much, when you know where to exactly look.

For you see, nature will come strolling once again; to clean what doesn’t belong here, like it always does, and it’ll return again one day. So why do you care?

For you know this already, you know a lot more already, and you know what to do.

Isn’t it?”

And he continued laughing, as in the dying light of the day I looked across the temple complex, along the broken mountains that marked the trail of floods that once came. And I heard the roar of a glacier breaking far away, up in the mountains. A local told me glaciers keep breaking across Himalayas, in small amounts, owing to the global warming.

“And they’ll continue breaking, until ...”, he couldn’t speak further, as I watched a tear escape the eyes of that local.

River Mandakini was silent, for now.
