The bird, evidence in an investigation of illegal trafficking, is native to mountain woodlands in Mexico, and during the summer, while uncommon, it can be found in the moist, wooded canyons of the Madrean Sky Islands in southeastern Arizona, southern New Mexico, and western Texas in the United States as well as northeastern Sonora, Mexico.
