LADY COPPER by @YELSSS

Artist and designer Sadie Clayton fuses copper with her own energy to create sculptures, technology and change. She speaks to Yelena Grelet.

Sadie Clayton is sporting a bold, pink afro hairstyle and a bright red lipstick, appropriately named ‘feel so grand’. Her smile is dazzling. The 29-year-old artist can be found in her Hackney Wick studios hammering away at a copper metal sculpture in a sateen, screen print dress from her AW16 collection and a 1950s feathered-hat.

Her love for Grace Jones’s fierce character, a pioneer both on the catwalk and in the music scene, sparked her interest in fashion design and a desire to empower women. As a naturally curious person growing up in the Yorkshire town of Mirfield, with a handful of mixed-race children in the population, she felt the need to experiment. Clayton struggled to fit in on her BA Fashion Design course at Kingston University. “What Kingston does well is commercial projects which allows students to become commercially viable when they graduate, but I never really understood that.”

For London Craft Week 2020, Clayton recently designed an exclusive copper drinks trolley for Sipsmith Gin and is currently working on a virtual show with Microsoft New York. On top of that, Clayton is also creating a prosthetic leg in collaboration with The Alternative Limb Company for a Sadler’s Wells dancer.

Her most noteworthy project is her collaboration with Ai-Da, the first ever female artist robot for the Tate Exchange Black Creativity and Technology Programme. “It was a massive eye opener to see that the Tate were able to put on this event to give exposure to Black people in technology,” she says. Clayton has also led a young people’s programme for school kids aged between 15-19. “A lot of them were from Black heritage and it was so amazing to see them get down and dirty with copper saddles, the pliers and jump rings,” she adds.

A driving force for young, aspiring entrepreneurs, Sadie Clayton continues to champion her craft, refusing to lower the bar for herself.
