"You can't sit around and wait for somebody to say who you are. You need to write it and paint it and do it." — Faith Ringgold
Happy birthday to the eternally inspiring #FaithRinggold, whom we were deeply honored to welcome to our exhibition "Making The Met, 1870–2020," where her piece "Street Story Quilt" is now on view.
In this triptych, Ringgold combines language and imagery to structure her complex, fantastical narrative of survival and redemption set in an apartment building in #Harlem. One stylized facade—a grid of fifteen windows—is depicted three times at different moments in a story that transpires over decades.
