Robert developed what would be a life-long fascination with architecture and his many depictions of ruins earned him the nickname “Robert des Ruines.” His imaginary landscapes featuring ancient ruins and beautiful gardens, often incorporated both known and fantastical architectural elements, as seen here in his view of the Palazzo Durazzo in Genoa. Executed in 1772, this fantastical canvas is one of the many extraordinary works from the collection of Ambassador and Mrs. Felix Rohatyn, to be sold in New York on 14 October. Perhaps best known as the resilient investment banker who helped save New York City from bankruptcy in the latter half of the 1970s, Rohatyn also served as the U.S. Ambassador to France from 1997 through late 2000, and was named a Grand Officier in France’s Legion of Honor. Amassed over decades, the collection reflects Rohatyn’s deep and abiding love of French and European culture, encompassing Old Master paintings and drawings.
