When I was a kid, I fought relentlessly for others like myself who were new to the country and were being picked on simply because we were a little different. In return, I got many invitations to the principal’s office and worse, so did my mum...I struggled for the words to defend myself but the people in charge didn’t seem to have the time to listen and that definitely didn’t help my ESL. When my mum came to picked me up from detention one time, my 7th grade home room teacher Ms. Wang said to her, “Ludi gets into fights almost everyday, but I’ve only seen him fight for what’s right.” I was still hurting from the bloody nose I was given earlier but the tears that swelled in my eyes came from the fact that somebody knew my story and told it when I didn’t have the ability. Today, I want to encourage all those who have a story to share and especially the amazing Asian writers and directors out there to tell your stories. You have the truest and most authentic voices.
