Following a 1972 incident on a Trans World Airlines flight, when a bomb-sniffing dog named Brandy found an explosive device just 12 minutes before it was meant to detonate, the president created the FAA Explosives Detection Canine Team Program, the precursor to our TSA Explosive Detection Canine Program.

This program was transferred to TSA in 2002, and the puppy breeding program began! Between 2002 and 2012 (when the breeding program concluded), over 550 puppies were produced, most of which served with TSA as part of the explosive detection canine program.

These days, TSA works with partners, like the @deptofdefense, to obtain K9s for our program, and the program continues to be a strong and vital part of TSA’s layered approach to security.
