Tenri City's station plaza has taken inspiration from ancient grave mounds for its innovative regeneration. In a grand plan by @nendo_official, the cofunfun 'mounds' incorporate a cafe, information center, bike rental, outdoor stage and play area. It adds a contemporary touch to an area steeped in history.

I've long been obsessed with the Kofun. Little is known about the key-shaped tombs that are dotted across the Japanese landscape with a particular concentration in this area (Nara/Osaka). I visited the Tomb of Emperor Nintoku last year. It's thought to be the largest tomb in the world and takes up more land surface than the Great Pyramids of Egypt. You need an aerial view to understand its actual size (2nd photo that's not by me.) Invisible to the naked eye due to centuries of forest growing on top, the structures are built in steps like the reimagining at Tenri. It has recently announced they are to be excavated to find out more.
