This small wooden door originally belonged to a box – or ‘naos’ – used to contain statuettes, and it would have been covered with sheet gold and inlaid with red and blue glass, fragments of which survive ✨

It shows Darius I, the king of Persia in the 6th century, dressed as a pharaoh making an offering to the jackal-headed god Anubis, who is seated in the centre, with the goddess Isis standing behind him.

Darius’ name is written in phonetic hieroglyphs within the oval cartouche above him – a motif traditionally reserved for Egyptian kings and queens. Egypt became part of the Persian empire in 525 BC, and during Persian rule Egyptian daily life and arts and crafts were influenced by Persian culture.
