Dating to the very earliest phase in the artist’s career, the work was created two years prior and features three of what would become the artist’s most iconic motifs – 🚗 💀 👑 – drawn on the surface of a mirrored cupboard door. 1980 was a watershed moment for #Basquiat. Following his participation in ‘The Times Square Show’, the young artist was then invited to exhibit as part of the ‘New York / New Wave’ at @momaps1, asking a then teenage Basquiat, at that time listed under the name SAMO, to create a bold installation of some 20 paintings. ‘Minor Success’ is currently on display in our #London galleries alongside the artist’s ‘Justcome Suit’ from 1983, both of which will be offered on Wednesday in #SothebysContemporary Art livestreamed auction.
