“Renjishi”
 
This is originally based on the Noh play, “Shakkyo” (The Stone Bridge) and adapted to a Kabuki play. It depicts the affection between a father and a son and is a very popular play in Japan.
 
For those who aren’t familiar with Kabuki, the scene of swirling the lion’s long mane might look familiar.
 
I had the honor of playing the role of the lion cub with Ebizo Ichikawa, Ennosuke Ichikawa, and Matsuya Onoe. All three of them played father lions with plenty of love and affection, raising me, the cub.
You can enjoy seeing the parent-child affection as the mentoring relationship in Kabuki.
 
This month, at Misonoza, Kikunosuke Onoe plays the parent lion for the first time. Mantarō Nakamura and I were taking turns playing the role of the cub
and receiving the affection of Kikunosuke oniisan. I danced as hard as I could.

I have a special fondness for this play and role. In the latest issue of éclat magazine, I’m expressing the lion cub wearing all red, which is the theme color of the cub!

「連獅子」
能の「石橋」をもとに作られた演目でありながら、歌舞伎ならではの脚色で、親子の獅子の情愛を色濃く描き、親しまれる作品です。
歌舞伎を知らない方でも、長い獅子の毛をブンブンと振り回す所作を見たことがある方もいらっしゃるのではないでしょうか？
僕はこの仔獅子の精を、海老蔵のお兄さん、猿之助のお兄さん、そして松也のお兄さんと様々な先輩演ずる親獅子から、愛情たっぷりに育てられながら演じてきました。
獅子親子の情愛を歌舞伎の師弟関係と重ねて観るのも一興な演目です。

今月は御園座で尾上菊之助のお兄さんの初役の親獅子の仔獅子を、中村萬太郎のお兄さんと交互出演！菊之助のお兄さんとの情愛を一心に受け、負けじと踊らせていただきました！
