These days have been despair mixed with a terrible joy- the kind that aches and gnaws. It is a tragic elegance that makes you cry and feel so desperately alive at the same time. Save your breath. I’ve thought it, too. “Beauty? What kind of heartless person says such a thing when their husband is fighting for his life in the ICU?” No, this isn’t a ransom I would elect to pay for foresight or wisdom. There is beauty in it.

These days have been despair mixed with a terrible joy- the kind that aches and gnaws. It is a tragic elegance that makes you cry and feel so desperately alive at the same time.

Save your breath. I’ve thought it, too.

“Beauty? What kind of heartless person says such a thing when their husband is fighting for his life in the ICU?”

No, this isn’t a ransom I would elect to pay for foresight or wisdom. If I had a choice, I wouldn’t pick this devastation.

And maybe it’s just a truism I chant for self preservation.

“There is beauty in it.”

A clichèd life raft or a deep, philosophical truth?

I do not know.

But here we are, so here I am. At every intersection we are faced with a choice. It is in this agency we reckon with ourselves.

Yesterday I watched you sit on the edge of your bed unassisted. Painfully thin and shaking, you smiled the kind of smile that both excavates and buries- an enigmatic calamity that either suffocates or brings us up as something new.

Your smile, your grimace, your radiance, your palor, your weakness, your strength. It was joy and it was pain wrapped up in that awful beauty and presented to me as a choice.

What did I see?

Platitudes of light and darkness, joy and sorrow are peeled down and given new meaning. It is in this pulpy mess we are made. It is here we decide whether we’ll be smothered or take root.

Today you reached for my face with a hand too weak to make it. It was terrible and it was wonderful. That dizzying swing of everything all at once.

And somewhere in there, I had a choice.

Every day, I have a choice.

There is beauty in it.
