Posted @withregram • @stevengute Recently multiple dance parties have been organized in Los Angeles as an opportunity to decompress after the @black.unity.la camp was raided, attacks from right wing agitators, and of course police brutality. The dance parties are a chance to blow off steam and celebrate after a long tense but beautiful summer. While these events are 100% non violent and peaceful, law enforcement has been draconian as usual appearing on the scene with riot gear in paramilitary fashion. The streets were blocked off when I tried to attend so I decided to fly my drone a couple blocks to the street corner everyone had gathered. Within a minute of take off several sheriffs pulled up hot and handcuffed me mid flight. I asked if I was being arrested, they said I was being detained and spent two hours trying to intimidate me... saying they were going to throw the book at me for violating FAA laws and city ordinances, etc. I was facing jail time and potentially significant fines. I tried to be as calm as possible and told them that this wasn’t restricted air space on the no fly zone map, eventually the commanding officers must have realized this was going to turn into a lawsuit if they weren’t careful and I was allowed to leave but they told me not to attend the dance party and go home. So sadly I didn’t want to push it and missed out on the fun (which is a bummer because it looked like a great time). But thankfully a couple other La protest filmers stepped up and donated some footage to help tell the story since I wasn’t there in the mix.
