“In the ’90s, there was this huge emphasis on the idea of self-publishing,” says Moxie Marlinspike, a cryptographer and Internet-privacy pioneer. “This idea that, if everyone could be both a producer and a consumer of information, the world would be fundamentally different.” And that that’s the world we got, he says. “Everyone more or less has access to the same publishing platform as the President of the United States. What we didn’t necessarily anticipate, when everyone was so optimistic, was how little it would change things. The dream was always that, if someone in the suburbs of St. Louis got killed by a cop, immediately everyone would know about it.
