Today is the first-ever #VoteEarlyDay, an opportunity for Americans to make sure they cast their ballots—and help shorten lines for everyone on Election Day (psst, New Yorkers: you can still request a mail-in ballot through October 27!).
The Zimbabwean artist and activist #KudzanaiChiurai depicts men brandishing batons above their heads with the bold lettering “Vote at Own Risk” in this lithograph.
These four words remind us of the fear and intimidation some people experience when they go to vote. Calling out the violence and corruption during Zimbabwe's 2008 election, Chiurai reminds us all that what should be a citizen's right is often a privilege, and makes clear the high stakes and value of each and every vote.
At the link in our bio, discover five works from our collection that remind us: Get out and vote!
