As an African and specifically as a Somali woman we have an inherited love for scarves. Whether it’s worn to protect our scalps from the sun or for adornment or for spiritual, cultural or religious reason like the hijab.
Each country and Tribes in Africa will have varying uses and attach different meanings to scarves/head wraps, the styles and colors used.
It would be unjust not to mention that African men also wear head wraps to symbolize wealth, social status and as of way of adornment.
