The Comte d'Artois, Louis XVI’s younger brother, was profoundly impacted by these plays and in 1776 commissioned a cabinet turc for his Parisian residence, the Palais du Temple. He was soon followed by Marie-Antoinette, who created a boudoir turc at the Château de Fontainebleau in 1777. A pioneer of his time, Emmanuel Alfred Beurdeley here combines the elegance of an 18th century design embodying the goût turc with perfection, meticulous chiselling and gilding.
