His family had called for an ambulance and made sure that it was very clear he was having a mental health crisis. Adults with untreated severe mental illness account for one in every four fatal police shootings, according to a 2015 report by the Treatment Advocacy Center, a national nonprofit focused on making treatment for severe mental illness possible. They also are 16 times more likely to be stopped by the police than other people. And while Black adults are more likely to report persistent symptoms of emotional distress, only one in three Black or African American adults who need mental health care receive it. We need substantial change to the way we are dealing with mental illness in this country. And REAL legislation that divests money from police forces and puts it back into communities for services such as real emergency mental health support, better schools, eliminating food deserts and anything else that particular community needs.
