This magnificent and very rare large famille-rose "dragon" dish was made during the reign of the Yongzheng emperor (1722-1735) and may have been intended as an imperial birthday gift. Notoriously difficult to fire, famille rose enamels are known as yangcai or ‘foreign colours’ because they were first introduced to China from Europe in the late 17th century. On this superbly painted dish, the vibrant and colourful design mirrors the emperor’s aesthetic sensibility, distinctive taste and fondness for traditional Chinese motifs.
Our Important Chinese Art sale on 4 November brings together a wide range of Imperial porcelains, ceramics and works of art ranging from early dynastic periods to the 20th century. Link in bio for more details. Please note: When handling porcelain objects, gloves can sometimes mask the sensitivity of fingertips.
