Some eight hundred years ago the Ethiopian King Lalibela had a divine vision to carve a new Jerusalem from volcanic stone underneath his place of birth. Monolithic churches like Bet Giorgis have now become one of the biggest tourist draws in the country. Due to the pandemic, I think I was the only foreigner in town this morning, with the hymns of the faithful echoing upward from in the chapel below.
