Dark and wintry evenings are upon us 🌙 like in this twilight scene of Berkeley Square, near Green Park station, in 1935. Stanislawa de Karlowska paints a pale street, almost empty of people aside from two women, dwarfed by the trees and buildings that rise above them.
There is a sense in this painting of passing life glimpsed from the window, in this case an upper window in the corner of a square. The viewer, like the artist, looks down on the fleeting world, as the two women walk towards a waiting taxi driver. This, in combination with the sombre lighting of the gathering dusk, evokes a melancholy atmosphere, wrapped up in dim yellow street lamps, bare branches and violet shadows.
