She can still vividly recount the details, and her stories from it are priceless volumes, both during and in the aftermath. I’ve heard her tell them countless times, and still I ask, still I sit at her feet, still with hot tears running down my face each time. Her two oldest brothers went to school by day and worked through the night to help make ends meet; she & her three younger brothers would go from door to door asking if there was any salt or spices to spare. It was in one of these outings where she & her brothers tasted chewing gum for the first time. Some US soldiers gave them supplies, food, money & handfuls of gum to take home with them. It was one of those standstill moments where unexpected kindness transcended all else and it stuck with her, still to this day. . My dad was a veteran of war, a different one, but one that almost claimed his life. He spoke little of it, said there was no glory in it, and that his service was to protect & preserve what is precious to all of humanity. I never heard him boast of his time in the Army or of his accolades earned, nor did I ever hear him complain of it. He was quiet regarding his 25+ years of service, and in all of it, what I remember most was his priority in making sure he read me my favorite books at night and instilling a yawp to search for magic in every moment. He denied the Purple Heart, that he earned a few times over, out of respect for his fallen men. He retired a Colonel and was among the gentlest, giving and humble of any. He was my Dynamite Awesome Dad. . It’s no wonder that fate had my parents meet, and theirs is a story for the books. This will be the third Veteran’s Day where I cannot call my dad and thank him for his service, and two and a half years since his passing. I’m not sure if one ever truly gets past the loss of a loved one, but I can say that days come where memories are remembered with more smiles than tears. Today I’m hugging my mom extra close, and lighting a candle for my dad, and for all who have served & sacrificed for the goodness of all beings. Thank you. 🙏🏼♥️」11月12日 1時26分 - catharinemisook
