Yiyun Li didn’t cry on the day that her elder son died, or later when her mother-in-law and her father died. But after finding an obituary for her babysitter, she broke into uncontrollable sobs. “A friend listened to me cry on the phone and told me that I was crying for the others, too,” she writes. “Another friend wrote to me that night and said that she, too, belonged to the ‘delayed crying club—and those tears do collect interest.’” At the link in our bio, Li reflects on tears, grief, and unspoken words.
